Working with Filipino virtual assistants across time zones
The Philippines sits at UTC+8 year-round— no daylight saving shifts — which makes scheduling predictable in a way that employers in mixed-DST regions appreciate. Manila is the same clock as Singapore, Hong Kong, and most of China. For employers, the practical question isn't “what timezone is the Philippines in” but “how much of my working day will my Filipino VA actually share with me?”
Most WorkFil employers fall into one of three patterns, each with its own scheduling playbook:
1. UK / Europe — the live-sync sweet spot
From London (GMT), Manila is 8 hours ahead — 7 during British Summer Time. A UK 9–5 shift overlaps with Manila's 5 PM – 1 AM. That's awkward for the VA, so the standard arrangement is your VA runs 2 PM – 10 PM Manila (6 AM – 2 PM your time), giving you a full 8 hours of live collaboration every weekday.
2. US East Coast — async-heavy with morning handoff
Manila is 12–13 hours ahead of New York. The practical arrangement: your VA works 10 AM – 6 PM Manila(9 PM – 5 AM ET the previous day). You get a 1–2 hour live window each morning when your workday starts at 9 AM and they're finishing up at 10 PM Manila. This is handoff-optimized work — bookkeeping, content drafts, research, email triage, ticket routing.
3. US West Coast / Australia — follow-the-sun
Los Angeles is 15–16 hours behind Manila. Sydney is 2–3 hours ahead. Direct 9-5 overlap is zero, but that's the feature, not the bug. Your VA works their regular daytime shift, which is your night. You wake up to completed tickets, drafted emails, processed data.
Holidays to plan around
Philippines public holidays differ from Western calendars. Holy Week (Thursday–Sunday before Easter) is usually non-negotiable. Independence Day (June 12), All Saints' Day (November 1), and Rizal Day (December 30) are universally observed. Christmas is a two-week cultural event — most VAs take at least 5 days off.
